The Hokies United team came together today to reach out to those in mourning at Nothern Illinois University, in DeKalb, Illinois. The NIU tragedy brought somber memories to the minds of Hokies everywhere, they also recalled the tremendous support that Virginia Tech received after the April 16th tragedy. Today, Hokies United members resolved to show NIU the same resounding assistance that the world showed them last spring.
Information about the candle light vigil
On Monday, February 18th at 6:30pm, Hokies United will host a Candlelight Vigil in honor of the victims of the NIU shooting. The vigil will be held under Torgerson Bridge on the Virginia Tech campus. Members of the community are asked to wear NIU's school colors, red and black, that day in support of the students. Red and black ribbons will also be given out on Monday night to all attendees.
Care Packages
Hokies United has also decided to send care packages to NIU students, similar to the packages Virginia Tech received last spring. Members of the Blacksburg community are asked to donate the following items to be included in the care packages: letters of condolence and notes of encouragement, candy, small prepackaged snacks, water, soda, and other drinks. Items will be collected from Wednesday, February 20th through Friday, February 22nd in Squires Student Center, room 314 from 10 am to 5 pm. All donations are greatly appreciated.
